Monuments and Museums

The centre of Budapest, a World Heritage Site, is full of buildings that commemorate the city's past and of art galleries in which to enjoy defining works from different periods.

The tour of the historic Budapest has as its defining features the Buda Castle (the former imperial residence), with the Baroque district around it, and the Chain Bridge, a monument that symbolizes the union of Buda and Pest. Among the religious buildings the Church of St Matthew and St Stephen's Basilica stand out. In terms of civil architecture, the Opera House and Heroes’ Square are monuments worth visiting.

The Museum of Fine Arts is one of several in Budapest and holds one of the most valuable collections in Europe. Within it there are several world-class works by artists such as Raphael and Titian, and one of the most important exhibitions of Spanish art, with paintings by Velázquez, Murillo and El Greco.
